The first measurement is just behind the scapula(finger is on the scapular bone). Try to take the measurement as vertical as possible. The EQUImeasure's front edge should be at the same spot. The saddle front sits about at the first measurement, so if it is taken too far forward or back, that is where the saddle will sit.
(Pardon the dirty horse...more pics coming)
The second tracing needed is taken about midway down the back, roughly halfway between where the hind leg meets the barrel and the base of the withers.
After measuring, please trace the inside of the flexible ruler onto a large paper or file folder. Also requested are photos of your horse(s) standing and moving at liberty. That's all it takes to fit an Advantage!
What body types do our standard size trees fit?
Our Narrow tree fits a horse that often has a steep "shark-fin" wither and a steep shoulder angle(example lower left). This tree fits narrower Arabians, Pasos, Thoroughbreds, TWH, Foxtrotters and narrow crossbreeds.
Our Medium(example left) we consider average(but you won't find this tree in any off the rack saddles). This horse is a bit wider in the withers and has a less steeply angled shoulder. This tree fits most average Arabians, as well as many other horse breeds.
Our Wide(example below, right) is designed for the broad shouldered, broad backed horses. These include broad backed Arabians, Quarterhorses, Pasos, and Kentucky Mountain horses. We also make saddles for all horses sized in between, these are our most commonly used sizes. Our saddle bars are available with less rock or average rock. The saddles will fit multiple horses and can be sized down to the next size smaller tree with our adjustment pads.
Sound complicated? Don't worry, we'll do the fitting from your info!

Above: Arab/appy shows an example of a narrow back. Note the steep angle of the shoulder as well as the loin.
This horse had professional fittings and owner was told that this horse was wide! She bought wider and wider saddles but the dry spots and balance issues got worse until she found Advantage saddles. The horse took our narrow tree. Everything improved after that!
Above: An example of a wide back. Note the broad, rather flat angle of the shoulder(she has her foot forward which dropped the right shoulder, good example of why trees do NOT need excess flare....the scapula does not increase the size of the shoulder, it hollows it when the horse moves). The mid back is almost horizontal then drops off. This is a CMK arabian, typical of the breeding. Click here for more pictures of this type of horse.

This is an example of the medium tree size horse...taken at the beginning of winter(again...how did I miss summer?). This horse is broader withered than the narrow one, not as steep of an angle, and has a broader loin. There is some shoulder pocket but it isn't as deep as the narrow horse's is(whereas the broad horse has virtually no pocket and nearly a flat, broad loin). The top three pictures on this page are also of this mare.
